Valentino Retropective: Past, Present, Future

Whilst on my travels last week I visited the Valentino retrospective exhibition that was about to close at GOMA. There is a book that according to the website is out of print but if anyone finds it available online let me know. I would suggest that if you weren’t in or around Brisbane to see the exhibition then the book is really extensive, particularly from an archival point of view. They only had display copies on hand so sadly I couldn’t get one for myself.

I do need to admit that I’m a fan of Valentino from a craft and talent perspective but had never really loved his work, as I do say Chanel. There were dresses in the retrospective that in my opinion were down right hideous, but they were few and far between, the majority being dream like wafts of silk and sequins were truly breath taking.

It was a true priviledge to be able to wander around one off coutour pieces for an afternoon. I’ve selected some of my favourite images below that should all be in the book and were presented as part of the archival part of the exhibit on his editorial work.

  1. I saw the Valentino doco on DVD and really wanted to check out the exhibition as he was really portrayed as one of the last of the couture visionaries – eye for fabric and cuts really one of a kind!

  3. I would love the book too, as it was sold out when I visited the exhibition also. I agree that Valentino’s style wasn’t always what I would like, but his attention to detail and the different ways he used fabric to create sculpture like detailing was so inspiring to me… and it is something I bring to my own designs. I have be playing with some of his techniques in the studio… my new range may have to be called a Valentino Tale 😉
