Ooh, forgot The Passage (which I thought was going to be JUST ANOTHER VAMPIRE book) but instead turned out to be a great post-apocalyptic thriller (as well).

I second Dee’s suggestion: MIDDLESEX. Excellent book by the same writer who brought us the Virgin Suicides. Middlesex will stay with you long after you’ve finished the last page… I’d compare it to Orlando by Virginia Woolf. I’d love to discuss this one with a book club!

Anything by Isabel Allende. All her stories are based in Chile and are so colourful and beautiful. An amazing story teller. She wrote Eva Luna which is part of the new Penguin Classics collection.

If it is not too late would like to recommend The Reader by Bernhard Schlnk and Blood of Flowers by Anita Amirrezvani. I have just finished reading them and really loved it..
    Happy reading!

Shinygirl I think this is what I’m going with my love, it sounds too good to ignore!

Boney Do you know I have never read any Isabel Allende? I know people rave about it, I’m just not sure why I’ve never got around to it.

rosa I’ve read ‘The Reader’ but your other suggestion sounds wonderful. Thank you so much!

Oooh all great suggestions – others that I have liked in the past:

I recently read “This is where I leave you” by Johnathon Tropper (so can see a Hollywood movie being made on this!) – quite liked it.

If you liked “Eat, Pray, Love” her sequel “Committed” is a fascinating look into the process and traditions of marriage – interesting read esp around the reasons why people actually get married for.

I also read a lot of Indian authors as well – any book by Chitra Divakaruni Banerjee (she wrote “Mistress of Spices”) Thrity Umrigar, or Rohinton Mistry is a great read for me.

Some classics – “Time Traveller’s Wife”, “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker or “The Cider House Rules” by John Irving are good

I also really like Jodi Picoult’s books (she wrote “My Sister’s Keeper”) – always get me thinking long after I have read them

    Happy reading! :)

Teen Vogue Handbook: An Insider’s Guide to Careers in Fashion

  13. Natalie 24 September 2010 - 12:11 am

Anything by Jodi Picoult is excellent, “The Pact” is one I read recently and loved.

ROOM by Emma Donoghue is captivating and intriguing. All from the perspective of a little boy who is held captive with his mother.
