Melbourne Central…did you know?

“Sponsored by Nuff Nang”

When I was at uni across the road from Melbourne Central in 2009 (affectionately referred to as Melb Cench) it was where my friends and I inevitably ended up during breaks or at lunch. Things have changed dramatically since then however so when I was invited to take a tour I was certainly surprised to find some more unusual features you probably wouldn’t expect to find at a shopping center.

Did you know for example:

There is a community garden where you can pick your own herbs and take them home….free of charge.

The dining hall looks like a restaurant and has been designed by Philip Chia complete with mosaic walls.

You can shop at Thurley, Oroton and Sass & Bide.

They support The Social Studio by providing a ‘pop-up’ space for them to thrive in a retail environment.

I certainly wasn’t aware of all these changes but was delighted to discover that right under my nose in the middle of Melbourne I could shop for some of Australia’s most prominent designers and then go and sit in a sunny herb garden to relax.

Here is my day out at Melbourne Central…

Since the herb garden has been around I go there all the time. Although its a bit selfish I feel sad now that everyone else seems to have discovered it because there wasn’t as many people there at first. I didn’t actually know people are allowed to take the herbs home though!

Those mosaics are fantastic, but must say I love the idea of the community herb garden. I often think it would be lovely if councils would plant fruit trees, herbs etc rather than ornamentals, so that the community could use the

Melbourne Central has certainly come a long way and it’s great that it’s trying really hard to do something different and unique for a shopping centre. I would call it my second home! The new food court is like no other.

I know right?! I had no idea that the garden even existed, and now I do it’s where I think I’ll find myself whenever I need a quiet moment in town.
