The White Wedding Dress

It was off to Bendigo for me over the weekend so that I could attend the opening of the White Wedding Dress exhibition. Two years ago I took the train up for the day with Mother Melbourne to see The Golden Age of Couture that the Bendigo Art Gallery also hosted so it was with some anticipation that I looked forward to this show.

Even if you aren’t interested in all things bridal from a historical point of view this exhibition is a must see for anyone interested in garment construction and pattern making. The embroidery, corsetry, lace and beading detail on many of the gowns had been done by hand and so there were plenty of quite murmurs overheard of unbelieving delight as you moved around the exhibition.

  1. See the book from the exhibition, currently available on Fishpond.com.au for $37. I have seen it for $65.

  2. Hi, I went to the exhibition on the weekend. As a birde to be it was wonderful, but i could also appreciate the workmanship.

Did anyone catch the details of a 2011 dress that was re created to replicate art deco. it had beading on the bodice and was directly behind Twiggly’s dress.

A name of the designer would be appreciated or any details you can remember.

  3. Beautiful exhibition, the dress purported to be Rebecca Twigleys wedding dress was not the one she wore in all the wedding photos I saw in the press. It was certainly a spectacular frock on display, her wedding dress was very art deco in design.

  4. Fabulous… I saw it mentioned on TV & being from North Qld had no chance of getting there, thanks for giving me a fix!

  5. Thank you for sharing your photos. I was so sad to miss the opening! But this has convinced me it is worth the trip to Bendigo anyway.

  6. WOW! I need to go to Bendigo.

  7. Gorgeous photos LM! The first dress is my favourite. What a classic. It reminds me of my Grandmother’s wedding dress, which if she still had today I’d definitely wear on my big day.

  8. I rad that Dita Von Teese leant her wedding dress, was it there???
