FASHION WEEK | Highlights of the #VAMFF Cultural Program

Nixi Killick

Last night the cultural program for the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF) launched – and it’s jam packed full of unbelievable talent.

Here’s my pick of what will no doubt be a visual delight and easy on the hip-pocket to boot – many of the events are free!

FASHION CRITIQUE: FACT OR FICTION?

The rise of social media has turned up the volume of talk about fashion, but is it too often reduced to ‘I like it’ (or the opposite)? What are the benefits of slowing down the discussion, to make considered assessments and arguments – in writing – rather than just sharing images with a thumbs-up or down?

With our Fashion Writing Series 2015 mentors, Janice Breen Burns (Voxfrock), Yasmin Nguyen (Vault Art & Culture), and Paris-based journalist Dana Thomas (Harpers Bazaar, Paris).

‘A NEW BEGINNING’ BY JENNY KEE

‘A New Beginning’ is a limited edition capsule collection referencing Jenny Kee’s iconic designs from her archives. Made with Italian yarn from Zegna Barufa, considered the finest wool in the world, this premium extra fine merino ‘cashwool’ is digitally knitted to create the ultimate Australian knitwear. Our event for the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival Cultural Program’s Project Series 2015 will be your opportunity to see pieces from this collection displayed in our iconic façade. Secure a little piece of Australian fashion history at this unique exhibition event.

To attend the exhibition opening please RSVP by email to rsvp@piecesofeight.com.au

FASHION, MEMORY AND CULTURE

Fashion, Culture and Memory looks at the many ways that our personal wardrobes reveal stories of individual lives, creativity and desires whilst sitting within a cultural and social history context. Even the most utiliarian of clothes speak a language of intimate connection, hiding layers of vivid history.

Join Lorelei Vashti (author of Dress, Memory) and Nicole Jenkins (author of Style is Eternal and Love Vintage) for a conversation on how fashion is personal, cultural and full of meaning and memory.
