A Twist on the LBD

Mesop dress with Schutz Juliana heels and Trussardi LOVY bag

Question: Does a LBD have to be entirely black? If you are a traditionalist or a Coco Chanel enthusiast I suppose the answer is yes. But it’s 2017 and I think a twist here or there is ok, don’t you?

The sheer versatility of the LBD means additions like a splash of colour, lace sleeves or contrasting collar can take you between varying events with ease. I was at lunch in this LBD recently and someone commented about how fab it was. I bought it about four years ago now, but because of the lace fluted sleeves and cuffs, it looked very ‘now’, my friend remarked.

If you’re looking for a black dress with a twist here’s my tips:

  • Look for a largely black background with ‘splashes’ of colour as you can see on this Mesop dress below.
  • A contrasting collar in white can take a basic black dress into the realm of preppy, Parisienne chic. Add a velvet bow—but make sure the hem is above the knee so you don’t look like you’re wearing a uniform!
  • Embellishment in the form of sequins or embroidery can really lift a frock from basic to boom. You can either keep it all black or look for metallic details.

So there you go, just a few tips I’m gleamed over the years from shopping my little heart out! Have you got something you look for when shopping for a wardrobe staple like the LBD? I’d love to hear 🙂
