Nothing and Everything To Say

St Frock dress

I’ve been writing to you now for 12 years if you can believe it. The last couple of months I’ve experienced severe writers block, to the point where I’ve considered walking away completely from LM and everything I’ve built.

The feeling is one of simply having nothing to say. Which if you’ve been reading for a while, will know is unlike me to say the least. The crowded landscape that is social media in 2019 feels sometimes claustrophobic and really, a little bit boring. Do I want to add to that? Is a blog essentially based on my musings and opinion really adding anything to the world?

I was reminded of this in a stark way where here in Australia, and Melbourne in particular there were many events over the weekend. My Instagram feed was overflowing with pictures of people dressed up, desperate to tell us all where they were going and what they’re doing. Some events overlapped and I was surprised to see the same people attending them all, albeit with outfit changes in between. It was the realm of the glamorous and elite, a world that I certainly have been able to mix in due to the blog over the years. Some were catching helicopters to get them there on time, others were brand ambassadors or #sponsored for the day by brands they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford on a bloggers pay check.

But you know what? I really didn’t want to be there, let alone updating Instagram or Facebook with posts that suggest, ‘Look where I am suckers!’

I think this feeds into the more general sense of writers block, because suddenly the world that I moved in, and really helped in forge seems suddenly vacuous and pointless.

I hear people talk about themselves a ‘brand,’ and happen upon people who label themselves a ‘public figure’ for no other reason than for a sizeable social media following. And I am #bored by it all.

However, I’m not done yet with my little corner of the internet. It’s been 12 years after all! Really it’s about changing and finding a voice when not just humans but AI are now adding their bit to the social media scene.

There is a voice but it will be different, and rather than being old, cranky and cynical I will be curious as I was when I started LM all those years ago.

Just need to get a few things off my chest first. Stay tuned.
