My shopping exploits haven’t come to fruition as I’d originally planned, but none the less you do what you can and today saw me shopping Granville Rd and Causeway Bay. I’d remembered Granville Rd and Granville Circuit from the last time I was here and it didn’t disappoint- not a huge deal had changed.

I went to The Rise Shopping Arcade which is just as I remembered it and while it’s not actually that big in size there is still plenty of  local Hong Kong and Korean fashion. It’s quirky and one off, you  usually can’t try things on but that’s simply because there isn’t any room. The shops are no bigger than your standard bathroom some of them.

Surprisingly I only bought a single thing- a belt for about $12AUS as most of the fashion is geared towards winter at the moment. None the less if you want a local experience and to steer clear of the luxury goods that pervade shopping in Hong Kong you must visit The Rise in Granville Circuit.

On Granville Rd itself I went to Maple which has great accessories, that’s where I picked up the fur snood and pearl collar from my previous post plus an ostrich feather vest. Stay tuned for that one! I also bought some silver lurex socks for $5 from one of the street ‘lingerie’(I’d use that word very loosely!) vendors which will look super cute with heels at fashion week.

There is just so much to see and as I wasn’t well I couldn’t visit each and every shop which broke my little shopping heart, but none the less if you want an alternative side to shopping in Hong Kong make sure you visit Granville Rd.

Then it was on the MTR and down to Causeway Bay and to the Island Beverly Centre which is a bigger and better version of The Rise on Granville Rd in Tsim Sha Tsui.

It’s filled with narrow corridors with shops of a similar size to The Rise, but I think the quality and variety is much better. I bought a top from a brand called Vaudeville & Burlesque and some leather ballet flats here, again I was mainly shopping for accessories and ‘lighter’ clothes but most of it was geared towards winter which is their season at the moment. The photos below are sourced, my vertigo really started to set in so I didn’t take my own photos but you never really know what’s around the corner Island Beverly Centre so make sure you take a look when you are next in Hong Kong.

I’ve worked it out that I can go out for a couple of hours each day before the vertigo really sets in and I need a lie down again.  In this such instance I went to the Jade Market for a poke around in Yau Ma Tei which was utterly exhausting whether you have an ear infection or not. I wasn’t sure whether I’d have to bargain while I was there, but it became clear to me that within minutes of setting foot in the place that we were fair game.

It was a juxtaposition of old world Hong Kong and new world China, some stalls being attended by elderly men and women and some by pushy, young people selling genuine antiques made just for you…..only last week.

Anyhow, once I got a handle on how things worked and had a look around at what was a/ genuine b/ glass c/ outright fake I was armed with how to go about bargaining. The fistful of beads you see me clutching below had a starting price of $600AUS being touted as Burmese Jade. My background in accessories told me it was more than likely glass, quartz or at a push amethyst and when I paid $80AUS for three strands my hunch proved correct.

I did buy some Jade, only one piece and all in all left with six necklaces and two pairs of earrings. It is absolutely worth a look but if you aren’t clued up on your gemstones I’d predict you will be taken down if you aren’t prepared to bargain hard. It’s quaint, it was quiet with only a couple of other tourist and locals about but unmissable if you are at all interested in gemstone jewellery or jade.

Once I’ve photographed what I’ve bought I shall upload in another blog post.

I only have these two photos for you today, my ear infection eased so I was able to go out for lunch but it exhausted me so it was back to the hotel and bed.

The sun was out today and it sort of reminded me of Melbourne in how quickly the weather has changed from freezing cold to 19 degrees.

I hope to be even better tomorrow and bring you plenty more updates from this beautiful city.

Or in other words, I have barotrauma or an inner ear infection of which vertigo is a side effect. It’s a cruel mistress and there isn’t much you can do but stay in bed and rest until the inflammation in your ear subsides. And how long does that take? Every person is different so who knows!

I feel as though I’m on a boat and that every time I get up and walk around the ground beneath me is moving. I’ve had it once before and its really quite disconcerting, but it will eventually pass so its just a waiting game.

Until I was stuck down I didn’t get a huge amount done but I did pick up a couple of things as you can see below. I have loads planned for my time here including some great appointments, I’m just crossing my fingers that I’ll be better sooner rather than later!

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve been in Hongkong and I have to say it’s superb to be back albeit freezing cold. Yesterday it was the coldest day here in 16 years due to an unexpected cold snap. I haven’t packed for weather under 10 degrees, on Lantau yesteday it was 2 degrees.

I had planned on shopping while I was here but not for winter clothes!

I’m venturing back to Hong Kong after 4 years and as it’s Chinese New Year and just because I love to have quirky nails I popped into Miss Fox Melbourne before I left and had these heart shaped nails fashioned.

Sara-Jane worked absolute magic on them after I’d described in detail what I was after. It’s a little abstract telling people to file your nails into a point(!) but she got it and below is the result.

In 2012 I’ve decided to mix things up a little bit and add a monthly opinion piece written by a fabulous fellow blogger. They will be humorous, serious, opinionated and are aimed to get you thinking about fashion in a completely different way. I’ve found that when I occassionally put my own opinion pieces on the blog (last year there were only four) they garner a great response, but rather than me sitting here ranting to my computer I thought I’d leave it to the professionals.

Opinion: Should the use of models under 16 be banned?

Last week, Versace’s PR team released a single of image of the newest addition to Versace’s stable of models. Her name is Kaia Gerber and she is Cindy Crawford’s daughter. She is 10 years old.

For now, Kaia is the face of Versace’s junior line, but if the fashion industry’s long-running trend of using pre-pubescent models in its biggest campaigns and shows is anything to go by, it won’t be long before Kaia is walking the runway for world’s biggest fashion houses, modeling clothes marketed to women more than twice her age.

There has been plenty of debate about the effect modeling at such a young age has on girls, with touted effects ranging from lowered self-esteem to early sexualisation.

But it’s not just young models suffering. When the girls used to sell clothes to adult women are not just pre-pubescent, but in many cases young enough to be our daughters, the collective effect on women is highly damaging to our self esteem, sense of self and the way we perceive attractiveness.

The use of young models by fashion houses is by no means a recent phenomenon, but it is one I believe is becoming increasingly fraught and less willingly accepted by women outside the fashion industry.

In 1980, Brooke Shields became the youngest ever fashion model to appear on the cover of Vogue. She was 14. Later, at 15, she became the face of Calvin Klein, uttering the famous line “You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.” Nude photographs of a 10-year-old Shields were banned from being exhibited and she raised controversy playing a child prostitute in “Pretty Baby”. None of that seemed to matter to the millions of women who bought Calvin Klein jeans after she appeared in the ad campaign. Calvin Klein went on to attract criticism in the mid 1990’s when he used 15-year-old models in a shoot designed to mimic a pornography set.

More recently, we have witnessed the fashion industry becoming increasingly brazen in its attempts to push the boundaries, with male Australian model Andrej Pejic modeling women’s clothes for Jean Paul Gaultier and becoming the face of a push-up-bra.

Vogue magazine has also courted controversy last year for its editorial use of 10- year-old Thylane Blondeu, who was used by the magazine to model women’s clothes.

As a woman, it disturbs me enormously that for an huge section of the fashion industry, “normal” and “attractive” equates to a body that is devoid of any and all of the hallmarks of womanhood, in all its beauty and diversity.

I’m not trying to incite debate about the use of “plus-size” versus thin models, however, I believe that when the “women” modeling women’s clothing are not women at all, but are children or men, there is a problem.

Women come in an a huge array of shapes and sizes, but the fashion industry has thus far been slow to accept and recognize this, as exemplified by Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld’s take on the increasing demand for diversity in fashion:

“These are fat mummies sitting with their bags of crisps in front of the television, saying that thin models are ugly,” Lagerfeld said in a 2009 interview.

“(Fashion is all about) dreams and illusions, and no one wants to see round women”.

Meet Annie Abbot the woman behind Melbourne shoe label Habbot. I was invited to visit her Chapel St Pop up shop last week and it was a delight to have a coffee and a croissant surrounded by gorgeous shoes. Annie started the label after working overseas for Net-a-porter.com and in Sydney for Sass & Bide. That’s exposure to a lot of luxury goods, and Annie wanted to bring an element on superb Italian craftsmanship to our shores in shoes that are perfect for the Australian market.

All of the shoes are designed here by Annie and made by hand in Italy from calf or kid leather, the latest collection being inspired by circus girls.

I love doing my nails, I always rally against the tag of being a ‘girly girl’ but if my nails are anything to go by then that label would certainly apply. About a year ago I discovered Shellac, but unless it’s noted on the blog I always and only ever have done my own nails and manicures. It’s sort of like a Sunday night ritual if you like, wiping off the week that’s been and starting afresh on a Monday morning with a new colour to gaze at every day….or at least for the next seven!

What to say about this gorgeous Leona Edmiston dress? I went out for a pre-Christmas drink with Kyra and she had it on, I think that’s when I fell in love with it. As it was right before Christmas (as in days) I figured I’d wait until the boxing day sales, but missed it in store and online. When Leona asked on Twitter what dress you’d like to get your hands on I instantly replied ‘Natalie’ even though it was out of stock. They had one left in the showroom which promptly arrived in my PO BOX.

I’ve had a long association with this fabulous label, they’ve supported my previous Frocktober efforts, and I wore one of their dresses when I appeared on the cover of Peppermint magazine (first blogger in Australia to land a cover of a fashion magazine thank you very much!)

Happy Friday folks, I’ve not done a beauty tutorial for a while now, and even though I have done a You Tube video on how I achieve this look it’s requested so often I thought I’d do it again for you.

I’m also trying two new products- Revlon Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen and Revlon Colorstay Crayon Eyeliner. I usually use Gorgeous Cosmetics iNK Liquid Eye Pencils but I’ve run out and in an emergency situation on NYE I went to my local Chemist Warehouse (all that was open) and bought these two products. They were the best quality I could buy at the time, but I’m pleased to report that so far despite costing very little they are long lasting and wear quite well.

This look is much easier than you think to achieve, specially if you have good products. I like to combine my eye liner with an ink/pen and eyeliner cream because I like a dramatic and strong, deep black.

Here goes!

1. I do my makeup base first and have pretty much everything else finalised when I do this particular make up look.

2. Line your upper lid as close to your lash line as possible with a cream/kohl based pencil liner. I like to keep it fairly thin but it’s entirely up to you. I also line right into my inner eye. I end the line where my eye lashes end.

3. To create the ‘flick’ or ‘cat eye’ look I then take the pen applicator and simply ‘draw’ it on as an extension of the line already there. I find this is much easier than trying to draw an entire line from my inner eye to out and end with a flick. I try to use the same brand so that there is consistency of colour, in this case they’re both Revlon, they just have different applicators.

4. Then I put on lashings of black mascara and pencil in my brows.

The two different types of eye liner applicators that I like to use, in this case its Revlon as that was all that was available to me but pretty much all brands have a variety of eye liner applicators.

5. You’re done!

It’s the quickest and easiest make up look I do and I love it, specially when I’m in a hurry. Yes that ‘cat eye’ or flick may take you a couple of times to get right, but if you can line your eyes with a regular eye liner, drawing on a little flick at the end with a ‘pen’ like applicator will be easy as pie.

I’ve been a blogger now for almost 6 years if you can believe it, I’ve used all manner of blogging platforms and I teach blogging and social media. But never had a Tumblr. Until now!

There are a couple I follow, Alicia from Sea of Ghosts ‘SEX VIOLENCE MELODY silence‘  in particular and given that I don’t used sourced imagery on the blog, only original content it seemed a great place for me to put everything else that inspires me.

I really hope you enjoy seeing what inspires most of what you see on the blog every day. 

One of my friends asked me the other day: ‘Do you ever wear jeans?’

She does see me outside of occasionally checking the blog but rarely if ever wearing denim. I’ve always figured that you don’t log on here every day to see a gal strutting about her city in a pair of jeans and that there are sort of, more interesting things to wear like this or this. Or this, or this.

So on a more casual day this is what you might find me wearing, or how I wear jeans when I do wear them. And they’re vintage no less.

This bag is rather new and was a Christmas present from Kikki K of all places. I had no idea they even did bags and beautiful leather ones at that. It has a 13″ laptop bag that comes with, you can pull it out or insert at your liking. So now rather than lugging my yoga/laptop/spare heels/kitchen sink bag around as well as my handbag, it’s all in one.

I do a fair bit of shopping, you could almost say I do it for a living as a fashion blogger. In the last two years I’ve turned more often than not to the internet to do a fair portion shopping.

This is for a couple of reasons:

• You get access to better vintage clothes, especially from the USA

• With free shipping to Australia it can be cheaper to buy higher end labels online than here

• Variety

I could go on and on, we all have our reasons but recently on Twitter a conversation ensued about the pros and cons of shopping on Asos. One of you said that you’d returned everything you’d ever bought from the online shopping Mecca, so it got me thinking about how to successfully shop online to avoid returns that can sometimes cost you more than the item itself. I’m not going to recommend websites that are good or bad, but if you have found a gem feel free to share it in the comments section.

Here goes!

Photos and videos

Basically the more the better. Asos and a couple of other US websites offer short 30 second videos with a live model wearing the clothes so you can see how they hang and move when you walk. This can make a critical difference to your decision making process when you can see just how high waisted those jeans really are, or whether the drape of a dress is sexy or sloppy.

If there isn’t access to video then another fabulous application is 360° viewing, particularly for bags and shoes. Using your mouse you can rotate the image completely to get a complete view.

As a rule, if a website has only provided one or two images of a garment/item you have to question why. Poor quality that they don’t want you to see? Click off.

Tip: If I have found an item that I love but am still a little unsure, I do a Google image search for the item. Chances are it will turn up on other websites and blogs and you can see what people have to say about it and how they’re wearing the item.

Fabrication

Quality online retailers will always provide information on the fabrication of the garment for sale. Again this can be critical in helping you decide whether it’s for you for a number of reasons:

Different fabrics fall and drape differently. Satin will sit differently to linen for example so if you know that a particular fabric doesn’t suit your shape you can avoid it. Natural fibers breath, synthetics don’t. You may have found the perfect summer dress but if its polyester is it really worth it if you’ll be sweating like hell wearing it?

Tip: Read the tags on the inside of your clothes to get to know your fabrics. If you already have an item in the same fabric as something you’ve found online, you will know how it’s going to sit and feel.

Sizing

Again reputable websites will always have a comprehensive sizing chart that explains their sizing against general sizing from across different global regions like the US, Europe and Japan. You will have to put some work in here and measure yourself however. You can pick up a measuring tape at most $2 shops these days, even the supermarket sells them. If you can’t understand the sizing then send an email before you hit ‘add to cart.’ I also read ‘reader reviews’ where possible, especially when buying shoes.

Tip: Always have a tape measure handy when you are shopping online.

Shipping & Returns

This really should be how you make your decision to make purchases online, and the first thing you look at. Always read the shipping and return policy BEFORE you start browsing. Lots of bigger international websites now offer free shipping to Australia, but always check what the policy is like on returns. From an Australian perspective you can always check out Austpost.com.au to look at shipping prices so you have a clear idea of what you might be up to if the onus is on you to pay for the return.

Tip: Always read the shipping and returns conditions FIRST!! Don’t start to shop, fall in love with an item and then realize that it will cost you a bomb to ship it or return. Be smart and you can avoid this.

I’m still living in my Diane Freis dresses, perhaps it is a phase but they are suiting me quite well this summer. I’ve bought them all online and after an ongoing Twitter conversation with some of you about the pro’s and con’s of shopping on Asos I’m in the midst of preparing a blog post on how I go about shopping online. I’d also like to say a he-uge thank you for your readership in 2011 and the fact that I almost (but unfortunately not quite) made 1 million hits for the year. December is a tough month traffic wise as you all disappear preparing for Christmas and on holidays, but none the less so really big events happened last year and you the reader made that happen.

It has perhaps been mentioned before that I don’t really wear pink clothing. I don’t enjoy it, I don’t think it suits me, but I am happy to wear it in my accessories. My nails are currently a lovely pink(can not recall the name) from shellac and my lipstick I bought at the Topshop opening and is called ‘Brighton Rock.’ I accidentally bought this ‘Fiery’ Calvin Klein blush at Chemist Wearhouse thinking it was a subtle rose colour. It’s clearly not, it’s a fiery pink that’s for sure.

So I thought why not wear them all at once!

Happy New Year!

It’s been wonderful so far(well all 2 days of it and one of those a little under the weather) and extremely hot here in Melbourne. 40 degrees today- sweltering. But that burning sun is often when I get my best photos, specially later in the afternoon when its not so high in the sky.

I wanted some dramatic weather to showcase this Tovah ’Allure’ cape that arrived just before Christmas in my PO BOX and completely unexpectedly. I’d met Tovah and viewed the collection at RAFW in Sydney last year. I was really blown away but her first collection and sadly left my SD card in the hotel when I went to her viewing so didn’t have any photos to showcase.

Anyhow, this was my favourite piece from the collection, fast forward 6 months and out of the blue it arrived. I could hardly believe my eyes so thank you kindly Tovah for the little surprise.

This is my favourite image that’s appeared on the blog this year and that says a lot as there are 100′s of them! The Gardener took this image while we went to get a milkshake. 

I wore this incredible Roxana Zamani dress to Spring Fashion Week in September and it was an absolute high light for me!

In October the biggest milestone I’ve celebrated to date came along: My 1000th Blog Post which I published live from a little party I threw to mark the occasion.

Another memorable fashion moment in November: Wearing Neo Dia to the opening party for FAINT magazine. Amaze.

December had loads of great content, but I still crack up when I look at this photo of me and Santa that accompanied my Christmas gift guide.

As 2011 draws to a close I thought I’d step back and take a look at some of my favourite blog posts of 2011. There are hundreds of them and its hard to choose, tomorrow we’ll take a look at July through December. If you have a fav and its not included let me know and I’ll dig it out!

It’s currently that glorious time of year between Christmas and New Years eve when you’re on holidays and have zero to do. I dragged myself off the couch to take these photos today because even though I can tell half of you are on holidays from my traffic, half of you are still here and I promised to blog through the holidays.

Did you have a good Christmas? I had an absolute cracker of a day and like most of you from what I can see on Twitter and Facebook ate way too much.

I mentioned this skirt in a post I did recently on purchases from Asos. This is their Ponti Origami Pencil Skirt which comes in plenty of colours most of which are on sale. As I am so short it will have to be taken up but I decided to snap it none the less.

I’ve also avoided the sales this year as I’m off to Hong Kong at the end of January so am saving my pennies,  but I’m curious to know what you bought where ever you are in the world. I did relent and make some purchases online but there is another post on that coming!

Extremely hard to believe we are at the end of another year but it’s the night before Christmas as I type this and we are gearing up for a sweltering day with a top of 30° which will make it the quintessential Australian Christmas here.

I always include a post of what I wore xmas day, but this is a sneak peek inside my apartment and how it’s looking this xmas. Long term readers would know I’ve had this xmas tree for a couple of years now and it’s usually decorated with a variation of birds and fruit. I love to hang up what I’m going to wear the night before and fill the place with candles. Seems the festive thing to do while I’m doing my best not to make a dogs breakfast of the present wrapping(I’m not very good!)

I do wish you and yours a wonderful festive season ahead and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your readership this year. It’s been huge for Lady Melbourne but it wouldn’t have happened without you.
