This dress appealed to all the things I generally look for in a garment: pleating, tassels, frills, full skirt and billowing sleeves. I love that kind of detailing and of late I’m become a little bit obsessed with Diane Freis as generally her dresses embody not just one but all of those components.
Spring seems to have arrived early so I’ve been able to wear this dress earlier than expected and it’s quite a joyous experience. The colour, the sleeves and the full skirt have a grown up whimsicality about them which reminds me of how much I loved to dress up as a child and wear my mothers dresses. We had an chest full of evening gowns Mother Melbourne bought at op-shops as our dress up box and I wonder whether it had any effect on how I dress now as an adult.
When I saw this dress on Etsy I knew it was something that embodied what I would have loved as a little girl, and I have to say that the 3 yr old who lives next door thinks it’s pretty special so perhaps I’ve never really moved on from what I thought was fashionable at 3 or 4 years old!

I think this is a dress from an earlier post? I love the voluminous sleeves. O. M. G. The skirt portion drapes beautifully (so much fabric—I love it!). ๐

Lady Bracknell recalls a visit, when she was in New York, from Mother Melbourne & a much younger Lady M. On sighting a spectacular, purple drag ensemble in an East Village boutique the young Lady M exclaimed with delight: “I love it! I want it!” Mother Melbourne responded: “Over my dead body!” Mother M has always had excellent taste.
Lady M – I found another one of this dress on etsy in a different colour… just in case one isn’t enough!

Lady Bracknell has previously opined on this matter, as she thinks she recalls, but sends her good wishes in any case.

It really does look pretty! You look like a princess and it’s just enchanting! I guess it’s safe to say that a 3 or 4 year old’s fashion sense is all about glam, right?

INCREDIBLE dress. It looks like stylised 70s drawings of boho women floating off into the stars. You wear it beautifully too. Was it vintage, or handmade?
