Over the years I’ve heard people refer to the The Sartorialist’s ‘light’ in New York. I’ve always scoffed, for two reasons- no one has their own light, and the ‘lighting’ you see in photographs is more about the photographers eye and ability to capture it.
But I am beginning to understand the longer I am here however, that there is a very particular natural light that hits the city in the late afternoon, summer, twilight. The shadows are long because the buildings are tall, and the sunlight takes on a soft yellow glow. I haven’t filtered these photos or colour corrected, I just wanted to publish them as they were shot .
I’ve always shot using natural light, whether its indoor or on the street so it is exciting to be here and wander the streets seeing a photo opportunity on every corner.

[…] in my mind. This blog post about a Subfusco dress that I wore and photographed in 2010 stands out. I really love this blog post from my trip to New York last year that my brother shot at sun set, and I do love this one; The […]
I know I’m not going to be the first one to say this but…. YOU HAVE AN AMAZING TASTE IN CLOTHES!!! I would lurve to own some of the things you’ve showcased on your blog and learn some simple rules when it comes to wearing clothes and accessories. I’ve always lived by the “less is more” rule, but now I’m not so sure…
Can’t wait to see more photos from NY on Instagram 🙂
@Samira @Miss Betty Doll @Sleekit the light really is special I have to say! Thank you for reading, I’m so glad you are enjoying the trip.
@Girl in Oslo I can’t quite see the exact make of the camera on the body of it, perhaps its inside but I can’t open it until I’ve finished the film!
Yes @Lady Bracknell it is being used and really, do you think I’d employ it as a prop?! I intend to get the film developed at the end of the trip and post the photos.
Are you actually using that Canon SLR with film or is it a prop? So pleased if you are actually using as such a camera makes you think. Which film?
What is the name of your camera ?
Have a great day from a sunny Oslo:)
Gorgeous! Perfect shoot
