Flying long haul means different things to different people. Four hours on a plane may be your limit, or perhaps (and if you are Australian) you might be used to up to 14 hours for one flight.
Flying to New York from Australia for example will see you clock up 20 hours flying time. Kind of insane, right?!
As I’ve done my fair share of overseas travel this year I thought perhaps I’d share what I use pre, during and post flight to keep my skin, hair and nails in shape.
Behold…
SKIN
Antioxidants. Let this be your mantra. I already use Cosmedix products and I particularly love their ‘Affirm’ serum. For my 14 hour flight I applied it twice- gotta be sure I’m keeping it well fed! Clarity helps to keep my skin clear as I often breakout after a really long flight but you can use what ever brand that suits your skin to help with breakouts. Another product I discovered at Sephora is EradiKate Acne Treatment which absolutely helped my post-flight break out in New York.
During the flight any sort of hydrating mist will assist your skin. There are plenty of products on the market, for this trip I tried Australian label Sukin’s ‘Hydrating Mist Toner’ which was light, hydrating with a botanical smell. I enjoyed it.
A beauty balm gets applied just before landing and like mists, there are plenty on the market these days. Clarins Beauty Flash Balm would have to be the all time classic though, a favourite with flight hostesses the world over.
If your skin gets really dry you can add something like Rosehip Oil to your regime, the one pictured is from NATIO. I like to dab it on just under my eyes for ultimate hydration.
NAILS, HAIR & BODY
I really believe in using the best organic hair care you can afford. I love, love, love Rahua and these travel sized shampoo and conditioner fit the 100ml or under rule for gels and liquids when flying internationally.
Hand sanitizer is fairly straight forward but a tip a hostie shared once was to put some under your nose to kill any bacteria in your nasal passages. I have no idea whether it works or not but if economy toilets are anything to go by you will want some of this on hand!
I popped this Kevin Murphy shampoo in as well for this trip and it doubled as a body wash. I figured if I can wash my hair with it, it’s good enough for my body for a quick shower at an airport.
CND Solar Oil (in the small bottle) will save your cuticles and nails from drying out, and you can use it all the time anyhow, not just when flying.
MAKEUP
You might not be a fan of wearing makeup while flying long haul and I don’t blame you- ten hours in with creased eye makeup or smudged foundation is never a good look.
Rather, try a brightly coloured lipstick. There’s a theory that wearing red lips draws peoples gaze to your pout, and I’ll try anything to get attention away from dark circles under my eyes when I step off a long haul flight!
I love bright pink myself, and here I have (L-R) Nutrimetics Hydra Brilliance in ‘Flamingo,’ Vera Moore in ‘Fuscia,’ Nutrimetics Hydra Brilliance in ‘Rasberry.’
Now it’s over to you, what are your beauty tips for flying long haul?

Love almost all Sukin products!! Just like you, I don’t wear makeup too when on long flights, just red lipstick and some eyebrow products (haha! can’t leave the house without fixing my eyebrows). I always bring jacket or blazer as it tends to get cold on plane, and handcream!
I’m off to Houston next week and will be doing 24 hours of travelling … I haven’t flown long haul in eight years and back then was doing it from Europe to Africa – which is not too bad/ I’m curious though as to what you travel in? Would you indulge me and please share?
Thanks
Wendy
Great tips. Its not a good idea to wear makup for more then 8 hours journey. So light makeup should be preffer in long hour journy. What about eye makeup. I want to add one thing that colour contact lenses should not be wear also.
As a frequent long haul flyer I have three essentials:
– Water, water, water. You CANNOT drink enough water when you’re on a long haul international flight. Staying hydrated is your best weapon to being fresh. As much as it can be nice to have a wine, avoid it if you can because it won’t help you stay hydrated.
– Highly hydrating skin cream. I use Aspect on my face (Aspect is unbelievable, has transformed my skin) and Aesop on my body. Put it on frequently.
– Hydrating lip balm – I forgot mine recently and by the time I landed my lips were a mess.
Obviously trying to rest is an obvious requirement, but in economy that can be a challenge.
As a long haul Flight Attendant I cringe when I hear or read another Aussie call us “hosties/hostesses” … We are Flight Attendants. Spread the word.
The male Flight Attendants I work with also love Flash Balm, it’s not just for “hostesses” *cringe*…
My essentials are Mac Fix+ spray, Visine Red Eye eye drops, Victoria’s Secret lip gloss…among many other products.
From one pink lipstick fan to another, let me tell you about my holy grail shade. I’ve been wearing it constantly for about 18 months now: Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Electric Pink.
It’s beautifully bright, and warmer than most of the other hot pinks I’ve tried over the years. And best of all, it doesn’t budge for the longest time (but fades gracefully when it does). It’s taken me a long time to find a vivid pink that doesn’t make me look like a tragic 80’s backup dancer!
@amelia it would be disingenuous for me to say no, you know me so well 😉
Ummmmmm is it really wrong if I say my beauty must haves when flying include a Xanax, a glass of wine, then 12 hours sleep?
I always remove makeup with cleansing wipes after takeoff and apply a sheet mask to hydrate. If there are two legs of the flight, I’d bring two sheet masks and a heavy duty hand cream. Toothbrushes, deodorant (roll-on) and mini toothpaste would be my other must have. Nothing freshens up more.
Great tips Phoebe, i love misty sprays too, i love the Jurlique Rose water spray. We all need that extra bit of extra hydration on long flights, so every little bit helps.. My tips are drink no alcohol, or coffee but supplement that with loads of H2O, and get some beauty sleep…you will feel amazing when u get off that plane- if all goes to plan lol 🙂

My flight routine starts with an oldie but a goodie. Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream on the hands with special attention to the cuticles and some lip balm and some extra moisturiser (SKII) on the face…then I have a glass of champers and settle in and watch a movie…
I’ve used Avene
As for my hair, well I keep it pretty short so i don’t have to worry about it much but what I always take with me is Terax Crema hair conditioner. It’s the best thing I’ve ever used on my hair and is great for between washes too.
Klorane Dry shampoo (essential travel companion!), Avene moisture mask, Becca Shea butter lip balm, La Roche Posay water mist & Uvidea BB with SPF 50+, Skinceuticals Clarifying Cleanser for deep cleanse on landing..plus Shea butter hand cream & mouthwash!
Do yourself a favour peeps… Klorane Dry Shampoo (can’t travel without it!), Becca Shea Butter Lip Balm, Avene Moisture Mask , Skinceuticals Clarifying Cleanser on landing, La Roche Posay Uvidea BB with 50+ sunscreen.. voila! And some Shea butter handcream too!
Claire
I’m flying home from New York tomorrow- just heading out to pick up supplies now!
I drink lots and lots of water and no alcohol. It keeps my skin hydrated.
I also carry a clean T shirt to change into just before landing, so I don’t smell stale.
Can you believe on a recent trip to Italy I was remiss in packing ALL my Aspect cosmesutical skincare (gasp!) & my Jane Iredale skincare makeup (die!) Yes, I did have my eyelash extensions (problem solved)…my first purchase was an eyebrow pencil (Chanel – limited & wrong colour. Surprising)
I then purchased another 3 eyebrow pencils on my travels, drank lots of water. (& the lashes lasted the distance)
