How to dress for lunch (or not)

Lady Melbourne's white blazer, studded bag and lucite heels

The business lunch, the networking lunch, lunch with the boss. I go to variations of all three (lunch with the boss is when I take myself out) and more often than not I’m kind of stumped as to what to wear. I feel as though I should wear ‘serious’ clothes, look corporate or conservative. I don’t generally have ANY items in my wardrobe that would cover  those areas, so I tend to end up wearing a mish-mash of what’s in the wardrobe thrown together in my version or rather vision of how I should look.

And generally, it’s not corporate or conservative. This is how my internal dialogue goes:

“I should wear a blazer.” Not a black or navy blazer with a crisp white shirt underneath a la Lauren Hutton, no I wear a version of a white dinner jacket complete with scalloped lapels. Seems appropriate.

“I should wear black.” LBD? Nope, wear the black skinny jeans.

“You shouldn’t wear bright heels.” No one said anything about lucite did they?

“Don’t wear too much jewellery that will distract people when you talk.” Just the one statement necklace then.

“Nothing says business like an up-do.” BRAIDS!

“Chanel.” That’s what I was thinking.

“Statement bag, think Celine or Hermes.” Nothing says statement bag like black leather and studs.

I am no alone in this surely?!

What I’m wearing:
Blouse: Etsy
Blazer: St Frock
Jeans: Levi’s jeggings purchased at Macy’s on my trip to New York last year
Necklace: Ottoman Treasures
Heels: Nine West, also purchased at Macy’s in New York
Bag: Siricco
Sunglasses: Chanel

  1. Hey there! I’m at work browsing your blog
from my new iphone 4! Just wanted to say I love reading through
your blog and look forward to all your posts!
    Keep up the outstanding work!

  2. I usually prefer the jeans and short shirts with flat sandals for such occasion.

  3. Ugh! This is a conversation that I have in my head almost every day, as I work in a corporate environment. After five years of employment, and with a ‘dress code’ hanging over my head, you’d think I would have got it together by now. But no.

I wear jeans to work almost every day. In most corporate environments this is considered a huge faux pas, but I decided that if I am going to spend five days a week working, I am going to do it comfortably and playing to my own personal style.

It’s pretty obvious from this (frankly amazing) corporate look that you play to your own personal style too, no matter the environment. And I think that is really great 🙂

    Xx

  4. You always look fab
