The blue midi skirt

Lady Melbourne wears a blue midi skirt

It’s winter here and I can’t lie, this outfit wouldn’t really get a big workout on a daily basis but I wanted to have a crack at wearing a midi skirt. I think it’s a difficult length to wear, specially if you are short like me and generally need the ‘space’ if you like between your ankles and knees to be visible.

While I understand that it’s not the point of this trend to have your knees showing, I think in terms of proportion you’ve either got to have a well fitting, quite tight pencil style, or something 1950s with a lot of volume. Anything slightly A-line will just look like your skirt is too long and you can’t tell.

Do you think about proportion in your clothing? I suppose because I’m not very tall and don’t have a torso to speak of, just an hourglass waist then I think about how my clothes will sit all the time.

What I’m wearing:
Silk blouse: Atrizia, purchased in New York last year
Pencil skirt: Stitches, from Savers
All jewellery: various vintage pieces except the earrings which are H&M
Shoes: RMK

  1. I love the look of the midi skirt – especially this one.. I think it looks great on you.. The length is good.. Your right it is a hard look to wear but I’m looking forward to trying a few on.. Especially the 50’s style ones!!! 🙂 xx

  2. Why thank you, funnily enough as it’s winter and it’s hard to get out and about most of them are taken at home with a remote control. You can no doubt see it in the pictures. Glad to hear you like them 🙂

  3. 🙂

  4. Oh yes, heels are a must with this if you are short like me!

  5. Try it with a vintage or op-shop find so you don’t spend a fortune, and then look for a well fitting new one. That’s my hot tip 🙂

  6. Woah that skirt is all kinds of amazing! Love that LM makes you happy, thanks for stopping by 🙂

  7. So glad to hear I’m not alone in in visually measuring my body when trying on clothes!

  8. Ha ha ha, you know what, after almost FIVE years owning one that has basically collected dust in the cupboard, I’ve finally worked out how to use a GHD to curl hair. It’s like eating an Aero bar for the first time- WHY DIDN’T I KNOW HOW GOOD THIS WAS EARLIER?!??!

  9. Your hair is currently stealing all my attention – are you doing something different? Just right as always x

  10. I totally feel you. I am constantly thinking of proportions. I always make sure it suits my body shape / type before i splurge and buy a garment.

  12. I suffer a height deficiency also and have been too frightened of the midi trend, up ’til now. You’ve given me the courage to give it a go! I think I’ll take another cue from yourself and hunt down a vintage number.

  13. You’re totally pulling it off and looking fab! But I agree, I also think about proportion for the same figure reason. I find midi skirts work better on me if they come up to the true waist and I wear a crop top so it looks like my bottom half is super long? But as I always tell my friends – they MUST be worn with heels, it’s the only way to go.

  14. Gorgeous! That colour as well! Amazing!
