New York!
That’s right folks, I’m taking myself off in the not too distant future for a month in New York. I’m going to eat, breath, write, see, hear and live New York.
But I know that I’m not alone in this quest and that many of you have been before me, so I’d love to hear where I should go, what I should see, who I should meet- basically your ultimate New York experience. I have 4 weeks so plenty of time (but never enough) so rather than sight seeing I’m looking to experience the local side of the city.
I’ll be blogging from New York and beyond and will surely mention your tips in my blog posts!

[…] The bag is latest collection Vintage Princess inspired by none other than New York. It’s called the Manhattan in bubble, grey leather with soft gold hardware and I’m pretty sure that it’s what I’m going to be carrying around the city when I visit for a month in May. I lurrrrrve it! Oh and you didn’t know I was going to New York? I’ve blogged about it of course! […]
As you know I am not a fashion blogger but I totally am hanging out for my NY trip in the not too distant future and I blogged about all the restaurants and cafe’s I wanted to check out here http://girlonraw.com/2011/11/i-heart-ny/
If you only do one of them at least make a reservation to Pure Food & Wine – although a raw restaurant, they make killer sake cocktails and everyone I have recommended to go there were non vegetarian and LOVED it!
Bookings a must!
get pancakes at clinton st bakery on the lower east side, check out the monocle shop in the west village, great bbq at fette sau in brooklyn, smorgasburg – a flea market and food fair in williamsburg/brooklyn, ippudo for ramen in the east village, 53rd & 6th halal cart for chicken and rice (it’s right by MoMA and they do late night!), eataly for italian, shake shack for burgers, ost cafe in the east village, brooklyn cafe, peels in bowrey or novocento for brunch, dos toros taqueria in greenwich village, maison premiere, momofoku milk bar…
that should keep you busy for a month! and food in NYC is expensive relative to other cities in the US, but significantly cheaper than australia – so you’ll have a ball 🙂 enjoy!
I love NYC so much that just looking at maps & photos makes me want cry.
We stayed in SoHo last time, right at the Howard street end of Crosby street, I can still imagine the gorgeous scent walking in to the lobby. Saturdays just up the street do a great latte.
I would consider splitting your time between SoHo and Chelsea/Greenwich and maybe even Willamsburg.
The Chelsea high line is fabulous. I had the best meal of my like at Buddakhan but didn’t have a bad meal in two weeks last time we were there. Balthazar, Fette Sau in Brooklyn, La Esquina in SoHo all fabulous…there were a few others but they aren’t coming easily to mind right now.
Walk, walk and walk some more. The subway is easy and totally safe but if you aren’t on a timeline or needing to get somewhere that is far away stay above ground and walk.
There is so much going on in Central Park during summer, the Friday night concert series has some amazing artists and it is obviously an experience lining up all day for the free performance.
Art isn’t really my big thing, I preferred to just keep wandering the streets, shops and boutiques and eating….but MoMA is fabulous all the same.
So Jealous!
Am another NY virgin about to take my first bite. Have 8 days in early June, after some time in San Francisco (suggestions anyone?).
My wishlist is similar, though I’ve tracked every vegan/healthy/seafood restaurant within walking distance of our Greenwich village apartment. So excited there’s a Dosa Cart during the day in Washington Square!
My partner went on an art tour of NY for a fine arts degree a couple of years ago. His top recommendation is to take a day out of the city and enjoy the scenic train trip up the Hudson River to Dia Becon. Amazing complex specialising in Modern Art. Number 2 rec is MoNA’s PS1
on Long Island. And then all the rest the other famous galleries that are on your list. Frequent NY visitors also put in a good word for The Cloisters (if you like medieval art) and the Frick (over the top luxury).
In June the Free Shakespeare in the Park season begins, if you’re still in town. What a great way to experience Central Park.
I’ve only had 2 Melbourne-worthy coffee recs so far Third Rail (near Washington Sq) and Blue Bottle (a good quality chain). Plus I’ve read of a few Aussies making good coffee in Brooklyn.
Have heard there’s a “Girls” tour of Brooklyn if you’ve watched the HBO series.
Looking forward to your NY posts.
Just got back yesterday from a whirlwind 7 days to LA w/ 24 hours in NYC. Had been twice before so it wasn’t as cruel as it might first seem. I second the High Line suggestion above, it’s truly magnificent. Other than that, lots of walking and looking at buildings. It’s a fabulous city. Walk across Brooklyn Bridge, wander around Brooklyn Heights and marvel at the renovated mansions, down Clarke Street. Have a beer or wine at Henry Street Ale House, walk down to the river and sit in the sun. It was really cold there this last week, so you need a good coat and good walking shoes. Enjoy! I’m taking notes from these comments for my next trip!
Sounds like an amazing trip for you my dear!

I wasn’t impressed with satc bus tour.
Mary poppins broadway amazing.
Gershwin hotel very funky and sex museum next door (interesting and awkward).
Coney Island if you dare! The roller coaster was terrifying got whip lash.
Miss Maude’s spoon bread too southern food restaurant.
Good walking shoes, we walked all day! So much to see eat buy! Lonely planet book helped us too!
Can’t wait to hear all your adventures!
You lucky duck! I hope you have a great time.
Just take it all in. However, a wander through the Met. Museum of Modern Art is great. And you’ve got to have one of their hot-dogs & ketchup! – bought from a street vendor. By the way – maybe a year ago I attended one of your CAE blogging classes. As life goes, for several months I’ve found myself unemployed – so what do they say? – when life gives you a lemon make lemonade? – well I now have a blog, called: 50 Shades of Unemployment (http://50shadesofunemployment.blogspot.com.au/)
I’d love you to check it out sometime. Love to know what you think. Meantime, just enjoy New York.
Omg be sure to have the pizza. Not the chain restaurant stuff, get the deep dish pizza in the small delis.. So delicious!
Bring good comfy shoes for walking.
God god I am SO jealous!
Hang out in Greenwich village
Walk the park
Eat street food
See a show on Broadway (touristy must)
Visit the Frick collection/Guggenheim
Hang out and walk EVERYWHERE. Best way to see the city. We will discuss this at much more length next time I see you!! xxx
Make sure you visit 9th St in the East Village for clothes and accessories and go to Lanzas, a traditional Italian restaurant that has been there for years, for lunch
I’m not sure where to start as I was in NYC for 10 days over Christmas and New Years and absolutely LOVED every, single part of it.
I’m not 100% if you’re a foodie or if you eat meat, lol, but Go to a Bobby Van’s steak house for seriously, the BEST ever steak you will eat, EVER. http://www.bobbyvans.com/
DO the empire state building at night, not day time and DO go to Central Park for several hours and just sit and people watch.
YOU HAVE to go to the Chelsea Flea Market, you will die. It’s like a high end market and I LOST my mind in there. Think Vintage gone mad. Whilst there, the High Line is a short walk away and that really enables you breathe in the city air and watch the traffic go by you.
You’ll have to check out the High Line, such an amazing concept. And get lost in Central Park, the Boat House for lunch is really lovely on a warm day. Also it wouldn’t be a trip to NY if you don’t eat pretzels on the steps of the Met! I’d highly recommend going inside the museum as well, the McQueen exhibit was on last time I was there and it was one of the most amazing things I’ve seen.
I’ll also second the recommendation for Bleaker St.
The fat radish! You’d be silly not to spend a day in the Orchard St area of Soho/the lower east. it is the equivalent of funky Fitzroy. End your day of shopping at the fat radish with some prosecco, oysters and some of the most delicious food you have ever tasted. I practically went back to NYC for the fat radish. Make sure you get dessert.

Also don’t miss Bleaker St!
This makes me want to write a book on NYC!
SleepNoMore is a must – http://sleepnomorenyc.com/
I can’t wait to read all of your NYC posts!
O.M.G. You lucky lucky thing!!
I don’t have any tips as I have never been but I hope you have a great time 🙂
