Do you keep things in your wardrobe that are ‘too good’ to wear or use? I try really hard not to, usually living by the mantra that you may as well wear it, especially if you love it.
In New York earlier in the year I was given this Brahmin Mini Arno Tote as a gift from my brother and sister in law. And I’ve noticed that I haven’t worn it all that much, because I absolutely treasure it. Which makes no sense right?!
And not just because it’s a lovely bag, because it was a gift from two very special people, because it symbolised my trip to New York (the Brahmin label is from Massachusetts in upstate New York where many of the leather bags are made) and because I had wanted one for such a long time.
I had a friend who’s dad would buy new clothes, say for example a shirt and put it immediately away, usually still in it’s packaging until such time as that shirt needed to be worn. There were rarely ‘just because’ situations for celebrating or wearing clothes for him.
So I’m curious about how we attach ourselves to clothes and whether we keep things that are special to us. Is it something you do? I’d love to know.
What I’m wearing:
Bag: Mini Arno Tote in ‘Pecan’ from Brahmin
Skirt: Brag Vintage
Top: First Base
Necklace: Lady of Leisure Millinery
Heels: Mark Fisher
Belt: Trent Nathan
Watch: Longines

Love this whole look 🙂 I definitely save some things “for good”. One big culprit being my Hermes Birkin. It’s truly embarrassing it sits in the box in the wardrobe, rarely making an outing, even though it cost so much I should carry it everyday to justify it. I have a terrible habit of buying evening wear on sale too. Even though I do go out to the opera/ballet/theatre, there’s definitely more than I can realistically get around to wearing. But I also can’t part with them. Ho hum.
Oh, the bag is just gorgeous!
Hi Phoebe,
This outfit is absolutely gorgeous. I especially love your new handbag and shoes, they’re just the kind of items I love. Use your gorgeous bag more often so that you can enjoy it more.
When I was younger, I would bring something I had bought home, wash it immediately and iron it first thing the next morning to be able to wear it. Now that I’m older, it is a different story – I buy something and often wait weeks if not months to wear it. Not too sure why that is.
But I would save things – the good things for another time, but after reading the famous poem If I had my life to live over by Emma Bombeck, I decided to use more of the special things in my house and to enjoy them more.
Lovin’ your blog
Happy day

Oooo I was just thinking about this today! I like to wear my “good” things all the time- to the point where I wear them out and feel sad.
But I am currently having a big change and getting rid of all my clothes. When I am done I want one white shirt, one pair of jeans, one pair of boots, one black dress etc… and that is all. And I won’t ever buy new clothes until I need to replace one specific item. It’s kind of an experiment in minimalism.
I’ve got those dresses as well, have pretty much kept every major occasion outfit as an adult. Hoader much?!
Thanks Steph and I know what you mean in terms of cost per wear. When I used to work in an office I hated spending money on corporate attire, but I wore it every day. And I always wore the pieces that I’d spent more money on!
Oh don’t worry Kirbybee, I have been known to wear clothes out of the shop!
I’m the complete opposite. Newbies in my wardrobe barely have a chance to catch their breath before I’m wearing them over and over again!

I’m trying and trying to wear my “special” clothes more, which begins with a shift in purchasing actually. So these days I try to make my “special” purchases (usually meaning expensive) things that can be worn often. For example, I’d be better off with $200-300 “special” trousers that I’ll wear and wear rather than a $300 dress that will get a few wears. I currently have one dress still in its bag, though, which I bought months ago for an event in late November! Nearly time 😉
Also, gotta say, I looove this outfit. So well put together!

I’ve kept the dress I wore to my formal, as well as the dress I wore at my 21st. I don’t know if I’ll ever wear them again but can’t bear to part with them! I do find myself “saving” gifts such as expensive products or a nice wine because it’s too good to use/drink… But then I need to remind myself that it’s there for a reason!
