Check Mate: Vintage Coats for Winter

Lady Melbourne's vintage check coat

Peaking out on a rack was the sleeve of this coat, so it was the fabric that caught my eye. It needed a dry clean, and most of the buttons were missing but I thought it was pretty special to find a tailored, pure wool coat that was made in England…for $15.

I’ve always taken the approach with clothing that it doesn’t matter the price, it’s the quality and fabric that has to be paramount. So whether it’s a designer frock or something at an op-shop, polyester is still polyester as pure wool is pure wool. I would have paid a lot more for a pure wool coat, having priced current season collections in department stores at around $500.

Can’t argue with a little op-shop gem now can we?!

What I’m wearing:
Coat: Little vintage number, made in England and found in an op-shop
Jeans: RES denim from St Frock
Leather boots: ASOS
Sunglasses: Gold Aviator Sunglasses from Sunnies.com.au
N
ecklace: Ottoman Treasures

  1. Yep, that’s all it needed!

  2. Hadn’t thought of that added bonus, this one is heavy enough 😉

  3. Looooove it when things like that happen!

  4. You can’t really seem them in the photos but I managed to find some vintage clear/white/grey lucite buttons which really compliment the coat. Great suggestion Yahav!

  5. Ha! Vintage ain’t for everyone, I don’t mind a bit of ugly/nanna chic 😉

  6. You look good 🙂

  7. Kinda ugly coat but you’re rockin’ it. Don’t think I could pull it off..haha

  8. Coooooool coat! Love it

  9. Looks fab, I recommend clear glass buttons to keep it all about the fabric. $500 is about the cheapest you’ll find, and probs still made in China possibly with polyester or acetate lining when you’d just love a silk or viscose twill. And even though I can’t offer $15 coats at Paris ’99 I certainly will happily show you $3000 coats now closer to $600 (shameless plug haha! ;). ××

  10. Fantastic find! I love those moments. One of my fave winter coats is a big 60s wool coat with fur collar I found for $20 in Vinnies. All of the buttons were missing, so I just figured I’d put some on, then happened to try it on and put my hand in the pockets… all of the buttons were tucked inside! 🙂

  11. Gorgeous coat, looks stunning on you. I had the exceptional luck to find a “Made in England for David Jones” winter coats in an op shop last year, although I paid $20, not quite as bargainous as yours. It is incredibly heavy (and so very warm) so has the added bonus of contributing to my fitness regime as I’m wearing it 😉

  12. $15! Wow, what a bargain! Even with a good clean and new buttons, still such a great score!
