Quick, quick!

I took these photos when I was on my way out this evening in all of 5 minutes when the sun light was ‘just so.’ Perfect.

While I was out I got chatting over a cocktail about how Melbourne women seem to lug around tote and shoulder bags full of everything from flats/heels to umbrellas. I did a quick inventory of my own accessories closet and found that pretty much all of my bags were on the medium to large size. Why?

I think it’s got something to do with the weather here in that we often experience 4 seasons in one day. I will often in my bag have: ballet flats, a scarf, a mini umbrella, notebook/s and camera on top of the usual suspects anyone would find in a woman’s hand bag(I don’t need to name it all, you know what I’m talking about!).

Am I unusual? Or is this trend of Melbourne girls carrying their lives around in their bags to adjust to the weather normal? Do tell!

I’m wearing:

Vintage silk dress bought on Etsy
Bag: Karen Millen
Ring: Colette
Heels: Payless Shoes

  1. I carry all that plus more! My bag is nearly as big as me, us Perth girls have to carry that much..can’t leave anything at home!

  2. That dress is absolutely marvelous. And I don’t know if it’s a Sydney thing but I carry around a tiny cross body bag big enough to fit wallet, phone, and either a camera or sunglasses (both will not fit)

    Maybe that’s just me!

  3. Yup, I carry a big bag everywhere!

    Usually it contains:

    Wallet
    Phone/ipod
    Water
    Umbrella
    Planner
    Pens
    Headphones
    Makeup (balm, powder, handcream, mascara….)
    Camera
    Cardie
    Keys
    Sunglasses

Whew! No wonder it’s so heavy!

  4. I have never been able to pack light. My bag always contains my wallet, make up bag, umbrella, cardigan, book to read on the bus/train, bottle of water, phone, diary, shoes (if I am comuting to work), and anything else I can fit in. Hate to think that I may have left something at home.

  5. Ugh, yes, I always carry around so much stuff! I always have sunscreen and a water bottle, and there’s room for a cardi. Then there’s my netbook and my diary, and my purse which is just a smaller bag which keeps hold of all the regulars and far too many lipsticks!

My shoulders don’t thank me 😉

  6. I’m definitely like you, i never know exactly what the weather will be like or where ill be throughout the day so its good to be prepared. Also i have to carry water where ever i go so little bags are never quite big enough. A friend was once teasing me for having over sized bags and said that bags have tripled in size since the 50s.

  7. Well I’m not from Melbourne, but can relate to carrying a larger bag. Being a full-time worker, the bag needs to be big enough to fit my lunch (I get v. hungry!) and accomodate any work that I may need to take home for the evening. I hate carrying an extra bag for these items because then I feel like a packhorse! A stunning tote is way more stylish than a little handbag and an additional plastic bag or green bag.

  8. You are looking extra gorgeous here! x

All my bags are small – too small! I am looking for the perfect bigger bag that isn’t too big, and it ain’t easy 🙂

  9. I am the same – I always have an umbrella, flats, scarf/cardigan and sunnies in my bag. Plus I also carry around my camera, sketch book and a book.
No wonder I have back problems!

  10. I have mostly larger bags too… I find the days when I do use smaller bags I always feel underprepared. I definitely think living in Melbourne with our unpredictable weather makes us feel we need to be ready for anything! I have seen foldable ballet flats around, that could be a good item to have in your bag that doesn’t take up much room and is very light.

  11. Almost all of my bags are medium to large, too! And I agree, it has something to do with the unpredictable weather. BTW, I’m totally loving your outfit!

  12. I’ve always been the type to carry as little as possible.
In my handbag every day I carry:

    credit card
    ID
    eftpos card
    concealer
    bronzer
    lipgloss
    iphone
    1 key

    THATS IT!
if i go out at night, i add eyeliner.

i just cant imagine carrying a whole bunch of stuff around all day.
    doesn’t your shoulder get sore?

i would never carry shoes in my bag. i dont think i even own a bag that would fit shoes. they’re too heavy.
i dont even own an umbrella.
possibly the only woman in melbourne who doesnt? haha
