ProBlogger Training Day Recap: How to monetise your blog with advertising

(NB- the photo of the front page has been republished and is not part of Frocktober!)

Today I had the pleasure of meeting around 150 bloggers at the ProBlogger Training day held here in Melbourne. It was really something to see so many bloggers coming together to learn from each other a better blogging practice. There was nothing like this around when I started out so where ever you are in the world, if you get to hear about a blogger meet up, training day or networking for bloggers I’d jump on that band wagon toot suite!

Here are some of the points I made today when I delivered the session ‘How to monetise your blog with advertising’

How do I find advertisers for my blog?

•You’ll need some decent traffic to begin with, at least 10 000 page views a month
•Networking. Your next advertiser could be sitting right next to you on the bus every morning
•Who is already advertising with other bloggers?
•Go local
•Blogs are individual so target advertisers that fit your niche.

Pros and cons of working with ad networks

Pros

•They have the advertisers on hand
•They cut out a huge amount of negotiation and admin
•They can attract bigger advertisers, ergo you can potentially work with bigger budgets and campaigns
•They promote your blog to their own networks
Cons
•You may not have as much control over the content
•You will be paid on a 30-90 day basis
•They cut out a huge amount of negotiation and admin
•It may alienate some advertisers that aren’t with said network

How to maintain and grow relationships with advertisers

•Be extremely clear about what you will/won’t do
•Be polite
•Respond to every email
•If you can get face to face time even better
•Advertisers love a little extra- tweets, FB updates, newsletters
•However never work for free!

I’m currently working on an e-Book about how to create a stellar media kit for bloggers. Are you interested in this type of thing? Let me know what you would like to see included. Lady loves you!

  1. Phoebe, thanks for such an inspiring session.

I LOVED your media kit and think an ebook is a fantastic idea!

    Stay inspired!

  2. Hey all, so glad that you liked my presentation at the ProBlogger training day last Friday, I certainly got plenty out of it myself.

The e-book is on it’s way, it’s in the design stages at the moment and I’m making sure that all the details are perfect 🙂

  3. Great advice, thank you!! Hopefully I can get to Melbourne for the even next year.

I can not wait for your e-Book, and I hope it can contain something on the process you went through from being a “hobby” blogger to making a living from it. This is probably not a topic covered in two seconds. But some helpful tips would be great!

From Norway I wish you all the best:)

  6. Hi Phoebe,

I was there and loved your talk – fast, informative and doable. I think there were 300 bloggers but maybe I was seeing double;)

I’ve just followed you on Twitter, I’m @bloggingmentor. It’s great to find another Aussie blogger who’s forging a path for others and keeping it commercial. That’s the way we can all improve our blogs and keep doing it better.

Yes, your ebook sounds like a great idea.

  7. Hi Lady Melbourne,

It was so good to hear you speak on stage in Melbourne. I love your style, your determination, your ideas behind branding and how you stick to what your “Brand” is.

Thank you so much for your information about how to blog, how to make money and how to be successful.

    Cheers
    Lisa

  9. Thanks for your openess at the #PBEvent. As one that works with brands who are looking to work closer with bloggers, I found your insights, comments and experience very valuable. I believe there needs to be a greater understanding from brands and PR’s in working with bloggers.

  12. […] After filling up on all the delicious food we broke up into two groups with two simultaneous sessions being held at the same time. With the first session being held by Phoebe of Lady Melbourne on Monetisation of your blog (the other being Creating Content with Sonia Simone) we learnt all different aspects of creating a good media kit and ways to monitize your blog. I’ll be writing about this in more depth through the week, however you can read on Phoebe’s blog a recap of her session here. […]
