You can always tell that L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival(LMFF) is on our door step when the Spirit of the Black Dress Gala rolls around. I’ve been covering this event since 2009 when Tullia Jack founded it as a project to promote sustainability in fashion. Fast forward a couple of years and its now one of the most coveted events on the fashion calendar.
I’m proud that this event is Melbourne based, produced and that it originates from a city that quite literally has a love affair with black clothing. This years crop of designers that included Emmarose Kinsman, Berri Drum, Christina Exie, Kate Aikins, Bento, Bhalo, , Gabriella Ferrante, Sonya Kraan, Lisa Taranto and Jessica Robertson who filled the brief but I didn’t find it as stimulating or exciting as previous years. The GFC? Minimalism at its best?
The devil is always in the detail with these dresses so I’d urge you to check out the website and make it along to the exhibition that is showing as part of LMFF to decide for yourself. Not to be missed.

Black dresses are fab! I can’t comment how much striking black dresses are. I mostly favor korean style dress and they often have the designs I adore.
Thank you for the write up. We have such a great team putting the event together: Dean, Jordan, Jemma, Ava and Greg.
