Shortly Melbourne will play host to the most anticipated theatre event of the year, Robert Lepage’s play ‘Lipsynch,’ that goes for….nine hours. You read correctly: NINE HOURS!
There are various options for how you can view the play but more on that later. About the production:
From the heartbreaking, poignant moment when a newborn is left homeless, you will be absorbed in the nine main characters’ lives spanning seven decades. Their surprising, humorous and emotional stories about the search for identity are overlaid with the human voice in all its forms delivering a rich narrative that spans across generations.
Lepage is the master of the theatrical experience. As audiences follow the main characters’ journeys they are treated to moving performances, exquisite operatic arias and extraordinary staging in a production spanning from war-torn Vienna to pre-revolutionary Nicaragua and contemporary London.
Presented over nine hours and performed in four languages, this is one of those rare opportunities to see a work by one of the world’s most remarkable and ambitious theatre creators – Robert Lepage and his company Ex Machina.
Don’t miss this memorable Melbourne theatre experience.

Taking my mother who will be visiting that very weekend from rural Victoria. My mother lives 7 hours away so it’s not often we get to spend time together. When we do, it’s nice to try new things and I’m sure the Lipsynch theatre experience will be a moment we’ll treasure for a long time to come. My mother is the type of person that would prefer to spend money on her children’s needs rather then herself and with 5 children, there’s a lot she’s gone without. It would be wonderful for my mother to get dressed up, have a night out in Melbournetown and put herself first for a change.
My 9 point plan to get me through the 9 hour performance
1. 9 hours will provide me with the perfect opportunity to show off my new dress that i will buy for the occasion
2. Taking with me my BFF
3. Champagne and chocolate and more champagne and chocolate
4. Curiosity- I want to find out what happens to the wailing child and how all the 9 characters a tied togetherl
5. Reapplying my red Chanel lipstick
6. The music
7. The emotions and psychological suspense of the show
8. Checking out the rest of the audience and their outfits
9. Checking out the cast!
My husband would fall asleep in the first 10 minutes. This would be the perfect excuse to get dress up and escape with a girlfriend.
The sheer excitement of enjoying a show in the newly renovated Arts Centre after its being closed for so long. Mint tea and a date on the town with my lovely sister would also get me through the 9 hour theatre experience. As would, the anticipation of what’s going to happen next in the show will be more then enough to get me through the show and I’ll walk out at the end surprised that 9 hours just flew by.
My boyfriend! He works late nights on weekdays so it would be hard to pass up the opportunity for a 9 hour date night!!
The sheer excitement of winning such a rare prize, then being transported from country to country by the characters moving storys, who would notice 9 hours. Oh and of course I would take my special blow up cushion, just in case of emergency!
High tea at 4pm and a glasses of bubbles from 6pm and an alarm clock at 9pm, ha ha! Sounds interesting and an experience that you should put on your calendar
The thing which would get me through a 9 hour theatre event would be a valet who could get me coffee any time I rang a bell! How very melbourne of me!
I have a feeling that this 9 hours would go very quickly and I wouldn’t need anything to get me through.
this sounds like a once in a life time experience that a poor student like me could not afford to participate in without winning a super awesome competition run by a super awesome blogger. fingers very much crossed! I think going down and under with the cast and gratitude would keep me going through the 9 hour journey.
