Worth a visit: Chelsea Antique Garage, New York

Chelsea Antique Garage New York

If you are a bower-bird like me and love nothing more than a good fossick around a flea market then you MUST put Chelsea Antique Garage on your list of things to see and do in New York.

I would say that the closest thing we have in Melbourne would be Camberwell Sunday Market, but the quality of stall holders (there is literally everything from trash to treasure) is a lot higher and the prices were really reasonable.

I found the following:

  • American kitsch and collectibles
  • Vintage clothing- Diane Von Furstenberg, Chanel, Oscar De La Renta
  • Old prints, maps, stamps, postcards
  • African and Chinese artifacts (not sure of their ‘origen’ if you get my drift!)
  • Bakelite jewellery
  • Danish and mid-century furniture
  • Porcelain and glass ware

And everything in between!

What I bought:
Diane Von Furstenberg vintage dress: $65
Copperplate print from a Parisienne magazine: $25
Jewellery- earrings, necklaces and bracelets: all up, $50
Jade pendents: $15

What I wanted to buy but didn’t know how I’d get it home:

  • A blue, glass, lemon-juicer
  • A 1950s prom dress
  • English bone China blue and white tea cup, saucer and plate set x 2
  • Milk glass vases
  • Old picture frames

This is still however another weekend of my trip so you never know, I might just find the room!

You can find all the information you’ll need on the Chelsea Antique Garage on their website.

  5. Hi Lady M, thanks for this post, really enjoying your travel posts and New York sounds like an absolute dream for you! Been there once but didn’t have the luxury of a whole month’s stay like you, I’m sure you’re making the absolute most out of it 🙂

With regard to items that you’re thinking of buying but have no idea how to get them home, you have considered packing and shipping them off back to your home address yourself, haven’t you? If not, in the US, I believe FedEx, UPS and DHL are pretty reliable shipping companies. Of course, the costs may be too prohibitive. But you never know! Anyway just a suggestion. Enjoy the rest of your trip! xx
