Imagine this: You’ve come to the end of the working week and you are going out for after work drinks. Your bag filled with ghd, deodorant, hairspray, makeup, hair brushes, Sally Hanson legs, hem tape-basically the kitchen sink- is sitting at home inside the front door where you left it this morning.
What do you do? Hit the shops? Run around one of the department stores from counter to counter ‘sampling’ the products? Or do you stroll down to Pure Chica Powder Room and use all of the above and more for $5? FIVE DOLLARS PEOPLE. I could hardly believe it myself when I popped in yesterday to have a look around, experience some of the treatments and meet the owner Janine Earl.
I’ve experienced powder rooms overseas and certainly when I lived in London the place was littered with them, but I’ve not come across one in Melbourne as yet. At Pure Chica there are therapists on hand to tidy your brows, manicure your nails, do your make up or hair, but what makes it completely unique is that they also offer a powder room service where if you are prepared to DIY you can, for all of $5.
If you are like me and just love getting all sorts of treatments done then they also offer services like the Business Meeting Makeover (60 mins) for $70 which includes daytime chic make-up application, shape, buff and pretty polish and a quick hair tidy. The complete quick fix treatment card can be viewed here.
I can just see myself using this on my way to the races later in the year, or on Friday nights when I head into the city to attend events. Take a look below at what I experienced and if you are interested make sure you pop in to see Janine and the girls at:
level 1, Collins Street Concourse, Southern Cross Station, Spencer Street, Melbourne CBD
Email: southerncross@purechica.com.au Mobile: 0401 793 799
and tell them Lady Melbourne sent you!
This is me as I arrived after teaching all day. Not a scrap of makeup, air dried hair and a he-uge pimple. I told Marlene to do her best and wished her luck.
Above is the powder room counter. You can use any of the products including hair care for $5. They also have party feet, Hollywood tape, bobby pins and brands like MOR and Lollia to name just a few for sale.
All of the premium perfumes are included in the powder room service.
I arrived missing some nail polish as you can see…
So Marlene set about fixing that up for me.
And last but not least it was on to making my hair sleek and straight looking. You are welcome to DIY as part of the powder room service for $5, but they will also straighter or curl as you can see in these photos for $35.
And here it is: the finished product!
Myself with owner Janine Earl. One smart and impeccably groomed woman!

Wow! Fab idea!
What a fabulous idea…I’ve always believed this would be a fabulous business. Best of luck x
Thank you Lady M for telling us about such a wonderful place.
Just wondering if this is a sponsored/paid for post?
Saw these guys at the Melbourne Cup last year and remember how everyone was fighting to get their touch ups and nails done! Such a brill concept, only wish I had thought of it first!
Now get set up in Sydney please!!
Michelle x
This is such a fantastic business idea! Would be a great revenue stream for big cities in New Zealand like Auckland. Can’t wait to move to Melbourne and experience your shop for myself 😀 x
What a fantastic idea! Just wondering what times they are open?
This sounds amazing! Can’t wait to check it out when I’m in Melbourne next month. How does a makeup artist sanitise their makeup product.. I’m sure they have to clean everything..
We have a full counter of makeup tester products that are available to use, each and every item is sanitised in between each person’s visit and disposable mascara wands, lip brushes etc. are provided and explained. We have a hostess (qualified makeup artist and beauty therapist) on-hand in the Powder Room, so it is no different to how any makeup counter in a department store would manage this, just a lot better 🙂 We pride ourselves on providing a clean, fun experience! Perfectly valid comments though.. hope this allays your concerns.
I’m with Domestic Divinity on this one – how sanitary is this? Is it wise to share makeup?
this is too awesome!
This is such a great idea! Wish they had one here!

Hi there Domestic Divinity, just in response to your question, we use a combination of disposables, and brushes that we clean in between each visit. We also explain to our visitors how to use the product and service and what to leave out for us to take care of. Pop by and experience it!
straight hair looks really great on you girly 🙂
from a rainy Oslo have a great day:)
It sounds like a great idea, but are they cleaning the make up brushes etc between clients? Or do they use disposables for the DIY?
Um, GOSH. Can they pretty please open in Sydney?! That’s amazing!
I’d happily fork out $5 each day just to avoid hurling all of those products around in my bag!
