Today’s Face: Golden Ratio Brows

‘Women are better educated about beauty, and have more disposable income these days,’ says Joanne O’Connell when I ask her about the rise of niche beauty industries that are springing up like fields of tulips in spring.

‘Women may not have a lot of money to spend on beauty, but they still want to look and feel beautiful. You don’t need a brow lift or botox to look 10 years younger- you just need great brows!

So I’m back at the Miss Eyelash studio in Elwood where I’ve been a handful of times before to see Emma, the founder of Miss Eyelash whose services are dedicated solely to eyelash extensions and care.

You can read up on my wonderful experience with Emma in these blog posts, ‘Miss Eyelash: Love & Lashes,’ and ‘Miss Eyelash does Lady M’s Lashes.’

Working out of the same studio these days is O’Connell of Golden Ratio Brows who brings her expertise as a beauty therapist and spa owner to Miss Eyelash’s range of services.

I have never had my eyebrows waxed, let alone ‘assessed’ so I really had no idea what to expect from this experience. I knew from previous visits to see Emma that it would be relaxing and comfortable, nestled in the light filled surrounds of the Elwood studio.

But what could Joanne actually do with my brows?

‘Sometimes it’s just a case of taking out three hairs and correcting the arch. It’s about ratio and looking at your bone structure and brow shape. In your case we don’t need to do too much, but modifying the top of your brow line slightly will make a huge difference.’

Joanne prefers waxing and tweezering for fine details than threading, and when I ask her why she tells me it’s a matter of preference for the beauty therapist. One is not necessarily better than the other, it’s more about what you are trained to use.

After measuring the points of my brow lines in relation to my eyes and nose, I lie down and Joanne gets to work on the waxing aspect.

In order for her to make things symmetrical, I sit up for the very finishing touches of the hair removal process. Then she applies a light tint to my brows and finishes the process by penciling and powdering the brows to enhance the natural shape.

I have to say that having light brows and not a lot to work with in the first place, I really had no idea what she could do with them. But I was thrilled with the result and learnt so much in the process.

I’d highly recommend the process if you have no idea what to do with your own brows, if you need to go into brow ‘re-hab’ (yep, it exists!) or if you would like a face-lift without the surgery. I was complimented all day after my visit and as you can see from the photos below, was not wearing any makeup.

Are you a convert to getting your brows ‘done’? Where do you like to go?

  1. oooh your brows look like perfection! I’ve tried getting mine professionally waxed, tweezed, threaded and haven’t been able to find someone who *gets* my brows! How are you finding the upkeep? Looks like you had some tinting as well? x

  2. AHHH I LOVE TALKING EYEBROWS!

I started getting my eyebrows waxed at Benefit Brow Bar 3 years ago and love the clean lines and ‘face lift’ feeling it gave to my tired face amidst uni exams in the middle of winter. It’s now a staple of my beauty routine.

In Melbourne I love Nikki at Zip Zip Wax on Little Collins Street (near the corner of Elizabeth). She’s been in the beauty industry for years and we instantly clicked so I trust her with all my waxing needs.

I love Benefit Brow Bar if I am getting my brows done on the weekend as they often will do your make up complimentary (perfect pre party!) and also so convenient when overseas. I have gone to them in London and San Francisco and know I will always leave with perfect brows.

  3. Thanks for your inquiry Lace. Initial consultation is $70 with Joanne. All bookings can be made at Miss Eyelash to be seen at Elwood or Mt Eliza 😉

  4. Awesome !! How much is it ?

  5. Yep Joanne said that as long as your brows are ‘done,’ you can get around make-up free. We’ll see about that one (!), but I don’t have any make up on in these pics and I think it makes a huge difference.

  6. Joanne said the same thing- first thing she looks at when she meets a person is their eyebrows. The flats are Tommy Hilfiger, I bought them at Century 21 in New York.

  7. Well, I was the same as you but I was pleasantly surprised by the results!

  8. I have never had mine done..and do not think i ever will 🙂
In my own opnion they have always been pretty good, but it could be i am kidding myself 🙂 Have a great day

  9. Looks great! I always notice people’s eyebrows and it can make such a difference to the framing of the face. Also… Where are your shoes from? Love them!

  10. Your brows look fab Lady M! It’s funny how they make such a difference to our faces. Even if I just want to go sans makeup, I always brush and pencil in my brows. People really notice. Btw, love your flats too, so cute!
