How on earth did shoulder pads ever become a trend? Leggings as pants? Do we need to talk about perms? Ugly trends have been haunting us for years and when I sat down to think about it, I couldn’t come up with a reason as to why.
Inspect ASOS or the likes of Boohoo.com for example you’ll notice they’re like a playbook for the hottest fashion trends of the moment. There are blog posts on how to wear the trends, look-books from which you can peruse and buy, and galleries of celebrities sporting whatever the trend is, adding instant credibility. If it’s good enough for Kendall Jenner….
Take this look for example: tight, extremely short denim cut off jeans, singlet with low slung sides and exposed bra topped off with chunky, heavy soled sandals. It’s almost like a uniform for bright young things, and while I admit being young is a time of your life when you should absolutely be experimenting with fashion, I’ve seen it make gorgeous gals look like stumpy, frumpy clones.
The shoes alone are like strapping two slaps of rubber or vinyl to your feet with duct tape and hoping for the best- no body wins.
And I’m not immune from the tentacles of trend in my own fashion history, having plucked my eye brows almost to non-existence trying to emulate Kate Moss in the 90s, sporting a blunt, micro fringe for years and let’s not get started on extremely pointed shoes circa 2003 that looked like you had ant eaters on your toes.
I have a sneaking suspicious that we know the trend might not look any good or suit us in the first place, but we play into it anyhow because of some sort of mis-guided attempt to be ‘on trend.’
So I’m wondering: would you wear something unattractive or downright ugly, simply because it’s ‘on trend’?
note- if you want to buy the shoes featured on the front page, you can get them at ASOS. Good luck.

So maybe it’s just a phase we go through in our lives right?! Thank god those teenage days are behind us, 50’s blouses with a peek-a-boo bra sounds like perfection to me 🙂
Oh how funny on the boyfriend jeans- I’ve only tried them on in a change room but that was where it ended for me. As I’m short they just looked baggy and made me look squat. I’ve got patterned ‘happy pants’ for around the house because trackies = yuk!
No ‘slamming’ here- I’m right there with on on the birks!
I might get seriously slammed for this being a fashion blogger myself, but….. I just refuse to wear Birkenstocks. I understand that they are practical and comfortable and I respect that people have worn them for this exact reason for years but I never liked the look of them. Over the past year or so they have become THE fashionista staple shoe, but I just cannot go near them!
Having said that I’ve definitely made some terrible “on trend” mistakes in the past… I do remember some white pleather jacket I work in the early naughties…. and some horrific white pointy boots which haunt me to this day… so I don’t judge 😛

When I was younger I was definitely guilty of the super pointy heels and with size 10.5 feet it just did not work. These days I try not to fall for the awful trends. Leggings as pants – not even once. Those chunky shoes are AWFUL but I did have a pair back in the ’90’s when they first came around. At the moment I’m struggling with the patterned “happy pants” that all the ladies are wearing. The only person I know who can pull them off is my Amazonian best friend who is nearly 6ft tall and size 10 who always looks amazing even in a KMart playsuit. I compromised and purchased a black pair of those pants that aren’t gathered around the ankles and flow down like a comfy pair of linen trousers and they’re so comfy and a nice departure from the “around the house” Tracky pants. I avoided the boyfriend jean phase for a long time but ended buying a pair for casual backyard events because they’re so comfortable.
Given I pay very little attention to trends these days, my answer is no. Not that I haven’t in the past *cringe thinking of teen years* but now I’m in my late 20s I know my body and style well enough to say, “No thank you!” Trends are very much what everybody has decided they currently like, and I’m not everybody, I’m me, and if anyone is going to see my bra, it’s going to be under a sheer 50s blouse.
