So you’re pregnant, now what?

Something I’ve learnt during the short amount of time I’ve been pregnant is: you simply can’t compare your situation to others. As much as you can consult Google, read blogs and look to the internet for answers, everyone’s journey will be unique.

There’s a couple of things that most people go through, however, and one is the changes your body experiences. Whether you like it or not, you grow!

So what do you do, if like me, you want to hold on to a modicum of fashionable style while trying to deal with various body parts (it’s not just your tummy!) expanding at an exponential rate?

So far I’ve not seen a lot of maternity fashion I like, or love here in Australia so have looked online, and overseas, for options. The main thing I’ve tried to do, so far, is incorporate my wardrobe to fit with the changes taking place, while still trying to be me. Here are some things I’ve been doing:

Even though this was posted a while back, I’m pregnant in this picture and am wearing maternity jeans from Jeans West, and a David Lawrence blouse in a size AUS 16. The oversized cardigan goes without saying!
  • Shopping second hand. A valuable tip from a new mum was: Don’t spend $$$ on clothes you might only wear for a couple of months then throw away. That’s not how I dress in the first place, so hitting up Savers and my local Salvos store for stretch dresses has been a godsend – $10 for a flowing TALLULAH dress? Yes please!
  • Go up about four sizes. I’m usually an AUS size 10, so have been looking at an AUS 16. I’ve only done this for tops, but at four months pregnant, I’ve got plenty of room to grow into them while still feeling like I look like ‘me’.
  • Invest in maternity jeans. Another girlfriend, who’s a new mum, said that she had bought her maternity jeans early on, and then just worked in her own tops, scarves and jackets with them through-out. You might not want to feel the restriction around your belly later in pregnancy, but it means, for as long as you feel comfortable with your ‘belly stretch’, that you only have to dress around the jeans and not buy an entire new outfit.
  • Buy a maternity bra. I’m not going to go into the ins-and-outs of this one! Trust me when I say that lingerie is still the most important foundation garment for you, even when pregnant.

If you think about it, these tips could just as easily be followed for times in your life when your body experiences major changes, not just during pregnancy.

I’m beginning a new platform where I’ll be able to bring you content like this, while Lady M carries-on as normal. I was just a bit excited about the announcement yesterday and couldn’t help myself on this one!

I’d love to hear your ideas about where’s good to buy great clothes for pregnancy and beyond, they might just inform future blog posts!

Lady Melbourne loves you!

  1. Awesome, I have a wedding in October so need some advice on where to find a beautiful dress!

  2. Sounds like we’re at about the same stage! I’ve been disappointed with anything that’s not basics, if you want a cool printed dress….good luck! As I said to Wendy below, I am on a mission however so watch this space!

  3. Congratulations Wendy! I keep hearing this from pregnant women, ASOS seems to be the go-to place if you want something cool to wear. I’ve also been told that gorgeous nursing tops are impossible to find, so I’m on a mission. Stay tuned 🙂

  4. Thanks so much Nicole, I think I should probably dedicate an entire blog post to the topic, might have to come in and see you!

  5. I’m 18 weeks on Friday and what has really disappointed me is how low quality and expensive maternity wear is here. I went into Ripe to look at a woollen tunic I’d seen online only to discover it was so thin you could see through it! What’s the point of paying nearly $100 for a see through paper thin winter tunic that won’t keep you warm? A lot of it is wafer thin, and non-breathable material.

I managed to score a day at Target a few weeks ago where they had a flash sale on maternity wear – got two dresses, three pairs of pants, five tops, 8 pairs of underwear and a belly belt – $450 down to $210 and as luck would have it I had a $200 voucher.

  6. Congratulations! I so wish you had been posting about this a few months ago, I had my first baby 5 weeks ago and found dressing during pregnancy so hard. There is not a lot of choice in Australian stores. My favourite maternity jeans were from H&M, and ASOS and Ebay were where I bought most other items. And like you I just ended up going up a few sizes for some other things, although that stops working when your belly is huge in the last trimester! My new challenge is finding tops to breastfeed in – I swear this is more challenging than pregnancy!

  7. The two obvious design elements that women did in the past are elasticated waistbands (’70s) and empire lines (’60s). In the ’40s and ’50s, when the silhouette emphasised the waistline, mostly ladies did as you’re doing and bought larger sizes of the styles they loved – I’ve seen a lot of vintage maternity wear and most of it you would never guess was maternity! All of it up until the ’80s looks like normal fashion. I’m really not sure what’s happened to maternity wear since then, a lot of it is very bizarre. I think the vintage approach will work for you as they still wanted to look and feel beautiful!

  8. I’m glad I’m not alone on the stripes! Will be fun following along your experiences as I have mine. Slightly better than comparing notes with Kim K 😉

  9. OMG Amy, the stripes!! What happens at the design stage, do they think that pregnant women have some bizarre attraction to them?! I’ve been looking at ASOS too, and while that huge band on the maternity jeans is terrifying (my husband took one look at them and said, ‘WHAT HAVE YOU BOUGHT?!??!’) they are comfortable as you get bigger and it actually helps your jeans stay up.

I’m going to be working hard to find the most fashionable clothes I can so definitely stay tuned, when the new platform is ready I’ll be announcing it here first 🙂

  10. Yay this is so exciting! I have been too scared to buy maternity jeans, that big belly covering freaks me out! I am sticking with my regular jeans for now with a belly band. I have also found most maternity fashion to be appalling…soooo many vertical stripes, really? I have found a few stretchy comfy dresses in target and on ASOS that should do me the trans seasonal journey. Looking forward to the new platform xx
