Meet House of Maxx

House of Maxx Boutique Skin Clinic, Melbourne | www.ladymelbourne.com.au

The founder of House of Maxx, Makayla Herdman suggested that we might like to meet as two women from Melbourne who’ve both started their own fashion and beauty related businesses. It didn’t necessarily have to involve a treatment, but she asked if I’d like to take a look around her newly appointed clinic, which she opened in August.

Who was I to say no to any form of treatment, particularly as I’ve given up pretty much my entire skin-care routine because most products aren’t too safe for my unborn child. Vitamin A, retinol based products and skin peels went out the window months ago.

We worked out via email what would be a safe and comfortable experience for me (turns out most of their treatments would be)  including some lash extensions, for no other reason than simply wanting to feel super-glamorous at the races, despite definite baby whale status.

The founding principal of House of Maxx is: the health of your skin is formed internally and externally. They have a nutrition advisor on-site, as well as a corneotherapist. A corneo-what?!

Here’s what the IAC tells us:

“The core philosophy of Corneotherapy is that the integrity of the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin) and skin barrier defense systems are maintained at all times.”

While peels and microdermabrasion, for example, will break down outer layers, corneotherapy aims to keep them intact. So, in a nutshell, offers a gentler approach to skin care.

House of Maxx use German brand Dermaviduals cosmetics and their corneotherapist evaluates skin-care requirements, so you end up with a custom prescription (in my case a facial) comprising the ingredient list of products best suited for your skin. No two facials are the same!

It was a new beauty experience for me, having veered towards cosmeceutical products and peels over the last couple of years. Cosmeceuticals have worked for me and I’ve seen incredible results.

That said, I now wish I’d known about things like corneotherapy early in my pregnancy so I could have kept up a regular skin care regime throughout.

No matter, I know about it now thanks to House of Maxx, a fab little gem located just east of the city in Armadale, where you’ll find individual treatment in the prettiest of surrounds.
