“Why has it taken all summer to photograph this gorgeous vintage Diane Freis dress?” I wondered yesterday while The Gardener and I were out and about taking photos, because I’ve certainly been wearing it. I own five Diane Freis frocks now—quite the collection. I’ve written previously about my love of the designer here and here.
And just to make this latest addition even sweeter, it was a Christmas gift from my sister who saw it in a vintage shop and immediately thought of me. Perfecto!
If you’re new to wearing vintage frocks or aren’t sure how to style them, here’s my tip: always make sure you have up-to-date heels and accessories so the dress sits in a modern context. Unless you’re purposefully going for a retro look, it can look costume-y without contemporary context. I always thought the character of Carrie in Sex And The City did this look to perfection; a gorgeous vintage number paired with a pair of Jimmy Choo’s and a Dior bag, for instance.
So just ask yourself: ‘What would Carrie Bradshaw do?’ and you’ll be on your way!
