Beauty Notes: The half moon manicure

Lady Melbourne with a half moon manicure

The half moon or ‘negative space’ manicure is somewhat of a trend at the moment, but I’ve discovered something brilliant about it: as it grows out you can hardly tell, meaning you can get an extra two weeks out of your manicure.

Rather than doing a nude undercoat, Sarah at Miss Fox just painted on a clear undercoat, meaning the negative space was created using my natural nail bed. Then the deep red colour was painted over the top.

I always get Artistic gloss manicures because I think they last longer. I know a lot has been said about Shellac/Gel/Artistic polish and that it can ruin your nails, but I’ve been having mine done for about 4 years now and my nails are, if anything, stronger. I never take it off myself, and I think that’s the key. If you can’t be bothered going back to have the polish soaked off, then it’s not for you. I’ve tried to take it off myself with disasterous results so I can understand when people say, ‘It ruined my nails!’ My blog post ‘Shellac Manicures: Your questions answered,’ is a great resource if you’re curious to learn more.

On another beauty note I had my eyelashes extended or ‘done’ before the wedding as you can see in these pictures. I haven’t used mascara for about 3 weeks now and I can see how this could be COMPLETELY addictive! Having had it done before, I’d say that you get what you pay for with lashes so make sure you go to a specialist, or in the very least a salon that has a lash specialist. In this case I had the manicure and lashes done by Sarah at Miss Fox (walked out feeling a million bucks!) but I’ve written before on the salons I’d recommend in Melbourne for this kind of thing.

Today’s final beauty note is on skin care, and I need to give another shout out to Miss Fox with whom I’ve just finished (or have I?!) a six month course of skin peels. Remember I wrote all about them last year?

Well I had my last peel in December 2014, roughly two months before the wedding. It’s February 2015, but the results speak for themselves I think as I’m not wearing any makeup in these photos, all I did was colour correct them as I took them on my phone.

So there you go, any more questions, just ask!

  1. Oh god that’s awful! Your skin might be a bit too stressed for a peel right now, but it’s definitely worth it for a long term solution. I think I might be addicted!

  2. It’s ‘Artistic Color Gloss’ in ‘Intoxicating,’ and I get it done at Miss Fox. I’m sure Shellac would have a similar colour? Hope that helps!

  3. Absolutely gorgeous pictures! You look stunning! And those nails are beautiful! May I ask what the colour is? Is it a shellac colour? it’s hot!

  4. Your skin! I’m dying! I wish mine looked like that, I should try something like peels out. I’ve had a bad sinus infection for about two weeks, that’s finally giving up, and my skin is a raging mix of red dryness around my nose, angry acne on my chin and oily on my t-zone. I give up, paper bag time!
